I am looking at getting a sub setup for my vehicle. Right now I am looking for a single sub, because I do not want earth shattering bass, just a nice full range sub to compliment the satellite radio.

So I was looking at a Rockford Fosgate12 in sub(forgot te model number) and a 600 watt two channel amp (Fosgate again), and a Qtech(sp?) box.

All total would be about 450$ installed. Good buy or am I getting ripped?

I would pay that much; Rockford Fosgate is a very good company.

thats not too bad a price as rf is a good comp. i got a 10" infinity perfect sub, in a qtech box w/ a jbl p180.2 for about 400 installed, so thats right around the same area.

RF makes good subs, as I road tested a Solor Baric back when they were still round, but I opted for the MTX 12" with sealed box instead. In the car I tested it in, the MTX really transmitted the force of the bass structurally through the car chassis. Your best means of optimizing bass when you have a seperate trunk I''ve learned is to direct the sub at the rear of the trunk. The RF was too tall to stand up so it laid on is back in a smaller enclosure. Alot more money, and just didn''t kick like the MTX. Now they may have improved with the L7 or the L4 Square models , but I''d stay with the Solo Baric if I were going RF! My amp tested was an MTX 2160 rated about 400-450 watts, with NO FAN!/idealbb/images/smilies/8.gif (I added one from Walmart for about $10.00)
If I had to do it again I would go with the Infinite Perfect (only sub with 3 year wty)Great response, Highest DB rating 94 SPL which means greater sensativity with less power. Check the crutchfield site for more info on these models your considering as they carry all of them. I don''t like running welding cables to my trunk! Wires can chaff and then Zowwie you got an electrical fire. (I fused mine in the engine compartment) Amps, I still like MTX, but my brother put a RF in his Bonneville with the selective bass control. (NICE Feature) He went with Boston Acoustics for subs, I don''t know what size, but I''ll match my MTX Black Gold against it anyday. He just likes to spend big bucks (Up and coming Dr.) Nice stereo with duct tape on his side mirror(presently broke like he is)...LOL positively providential if I say so myself.../idealbb/images/smilies/9.gif

Avelanche, I stand corrected...I was talking about Kicker Subs, not Rockford Subs, so I suppose you can disregard the Solo Baric report? As a side note, I looked in my most recent Crutchfields which came today, and there''s about 5 different lines of RF Subs. The Punch "Z''s" are the cheapest and sell two for the price of one like some JBL, and other lower end lines which have spade terminal lugs, and just regular stamped steel baskets which can (under loads) change their configurations. Not good for a subwoofer. ALso the surrounds are cheaper and not as large for better excursion.
I''d go with the upper scale "Punch HE or HE2''s" at least so that you don''t short-change yourself on a investment that''s going to wear like a right front tire? (curbs, pot holes, etc...)
I''d still give the Infinity Kappa Perfects a looksie as Crutchfields has them on sale with a "Q" Logic Box for around $200.00 on the 10", and $249.00 on the 12". I don''t know for how long the sale is on either?
The SPL on the 12" is "96" SPL which is insanely sensitive and power rated from 75-350 watts @ 4 ohms, and with the 3 yr wty, you''re buying insurance. Most every other sub no matter how expensive only comes with a 1 yr wty.

Anyway, just wanted to make that correction to my last post. Happy Thumping!!
/idealbb/images/smilies/9.gif

the RF amps from a couple years ago were very solid. They were rated very conservatively and had a lot of head room. This seems to have changed. I was strolling through BB a couple weeks ago and saw the new line of RFs, I noticed they now rate their amps in terms of dynamic power instead of RMS. They''ve gone the way of jesen and it''s sad. Also the build quality the last 2 years or so is not what it used to be.

Yeah I have gone in a totally different direction after talking to a buddy online that is into the sub/car audio scene and competitions.

He did state that Rockford was a decent brand, but for what I was going to pay I could get so much more.

He recommended a Hifonics Amp, and a Image Dynamic Subwoofer. So I am heavily looking into this setup. I am sold on the Amp, the sub is a bit on the steep side (200 dollars), but it is very tempting. Also looking into the Polk MOMO''s.

Ave,
Have you looked at JL Audio subs? I can't say enough great things about them. They are rock solid performers.
Give them a listen if you can.
http://www.jlaudio.com/subwoofers/index.html

They also make these incredible Stealthboxes. That fit perfectsly into cars. Amazing sound too. Only problem is, they are way pricy!

V

Don''t know if its a good amp or not, but i was planning on getting the US-Acoustics USB-2150 amp from Crutchfield for $179. as a Sub amp.

Its a 2 channel, 150 RMS Per channel, that when bridged, puts out 450 RMS into 4 Ohms. And this is at a rated 12.9 input volts, compared to other amps that rate their power at 13.6 volts or more.

And just incase your interested I was also looking at the 4065 from the same company to put out 4 X 65 for the front and rears. Also with the same input voltage specs. This one is $130.

Since crutchfield has a 30 return policy, I figured I''d try them. If they sucked, I''d return them, and get something more expensive.

the JL's aren't bad for 12"s, i have 4 W3V2's in chamber style L-ported boxes pushed by 2 1,000 watt crunch amps and a 2.0 power acoustik cap, looking at a power acoustik bass driver to bring out a little more control and definition to the bass
