Okay, I installed a matching new pair of Infinity 572.5CF in the back of my Ford Ranger. So I turn on the deck (new Sony CDX730) and the new back speakers sound like crap. The bass is gone! I plug back in the old Ford back speaker and the bass returns. What gives? Yes, I checked and made sure the wiring was correct, no diff. Questions: do I need an amp, and do I need to upgrade the factory wiring. Also, when I turn up the volume, the sound is crap. I''m so confused. Please advise.

Andergar

You might need an outboard amp to power your speakers.

S & V Moderator/idealbb/images/smilies/2.gif

Hello andergar,
I''ve had some experience with upgrading sound systems in FMC sound systems, so here''s a list in no particular order to check:

Verify your previous system WASN''T a Premium Stereo system, as these systems use a seperate amp which isn''t compatible with Non-FMC head units.
You may need to install what''s called a "pigtail" which by-passes the factory amp.

FMC still hasn''t caught on to using ample gauge wire when they install stereo systems. You''ll find the wire is (at best) a 20-22 awg which is ok for lower wattage factory stereos, but you need larger wire for hungry amps and speakers. Say like 4-8 awg (power feeds) for the amp, and at least 12-14awg (speaker runs) for the surrround speakers.

Ensure your head unit doesn''t have a LFE or adj cross-over that reserves low end bass for a line level out to presumably a seperate amp for a sub-woofer.

And finally, surround speakers are generally considered mid-drivers nowadays, and don''t provide much bass below the 60hz-120hz region. I know alot of mfgs claim their speakers do reproduce down to 40hz or 50hz, but few deliver, and therein lies the purpose for subwoofer(s).

I hope you find the problem and enjoy your new tunes! Hey thanks for the advice. After a call to the Ford dealer, he told me to call their factory radio install shop. So I did and they knew all about the existing Ford amp. And for $75 dollars, they will re-wire it. So tomorrow I will have it done. If I decide to upgrade to an amp, what kind of multi channel would you recommend? I don''t have a lot of money. Thanks again.

What would you recommend for a multi channel amp? I''m on a budget. Thanks.

I like MTX which sends an actual calibration result form with your new amp showing what it actually specs out at on the bench. Crutchfield has some units on sale for $150.00 I think?
I''m sure there are other amps equally good, but I like the fact that somebody takes the time to verify and document what I''m buying. That''s how it should be done by ALL mfgs!
Check your pm too.

Cheers!/idealbb/images/smilies/2.gif
