Thanks to all for the advice on what to get! I got a great deal on the Onkyo 696 and matching Polk speakers. So far so good.
SOME SETUP QUESTIONS I HAD:
1. The Subwoofer has a few choices for inputs: The salesman gave me a MOnster RCA cable/Y-splitter which I connected from Sub PRE-OUT to the Left & Right LINE-IN. IS this preferred/better? THere are also a bunch of speaker wire jacks that I don''''t know if I need?
2. Do gold plated RCA cables make a big difference for connecting components? I''''m using the "EL Cheapo" brand I had around the house.
3.The setup instructions specifically say to connect the RCA Audio outs from DVD in addition to the Optical output? WHY is this, isn''''t this redundant?
THATS all for now
MUCH THANKS
biggrin.gif border=0

1. Use the line-in.
2. That is debateable, you should notice a lttle difference. You will really see a difference with S-Video.
3. The optical is for video, I do believe.

If you''re using the optical output of the DVD there is no need to use the analog RCA outs( red and white) unless you want to use the DVD player to play CD''s and use the DVD own DAC''s.
biggrin.gif border=0

I do use the DVD player as a CD player and it seems to work? Would it be better not to use the DVD''s DAC (digital-analog converter???). How do I know if the DVD player will send digital signals through the optical out when playing CD''s ( I thought it was only for DD or DTS audio)?

You can still listen to CD''s on your DVD player thorough the optical outputs. The receiver will recognize the signals. DAC''s will depend on the equipment. I f you have a high end DVD player the DAC''s will be very good. Or if your receiver is one of the higher end models it will also have excellent DAC''s.
I suggest you try it both ways and see which sounds better to you.

optical is not for the video its for the sound..i''m not sure however which you are hearing the optical or the rca jacks. i would disconnect the rca plugs and use only the optical, make sure you set up your dvd player to recognize dd/dts signals and then play away. there should be a huge difference!! without the optical (or coax digital cable) you are basically only getting dolby pro logic, not dolby digital.

jonkatz,
FYI, my brother has a JVC XV-D723 prog. scan player and in the audio hook up section it staes to hook up both digital and analog audio conn. It states that "depending on the type of disc no audio may be reproduced from the digital output." He hooked up dig. coax only and has had no problems so far with DVD Video, DVD Audio, & CDs.
Happy Holidays,
randy smile.gif border=0

Don''t laugh, but when I recently upgraded to a 5.1 reciever. I had the 5.1 analog RCAs connected, the digital coaxial connected, AND the digital optical connected, all at once. After staring at them for an hour and re-reading the manual 50 times. I finally unpluged everything but the lone Digital optical plug, and everythings been just fine since. biggrin.gif border=0

I pulled out the RCA''s and still works fine. Rcvr indicator says DDigital or DTS when playing CD''s and then switches to D-PCS when playing CD''s.
I guess the Rcvr. instructions try to "idiot proof" the set-up for all types of DVD players? biggrin.gif border=0
Anyone know whar D-PCS is means?
NEXT QUESTION: Will 16 guage spkr wire be adequate for a run of about 35'' of wire or will I lose some quality? Do i need heavier?

I think the D-PCS is the defult setting when there is no Dolby Digital or DTS signal detected. Mine says Digital-PCM, But I don''t know off hand what it stands for. Maybe someone can enlighten us? confused.gif border=0

mine says the same. I meant to write D-PCM, which I suspect means its converting the digital CD audio into analog stereo... can anyone confirm this? eek.gif border=0

Randy,
Tell your brother to use the 5.1 outputs on the JVC-GD723. That way he''ll get full resolution with DVD-Audio. Otherwise all he''s getting from his DVD-A disc is the DD version and not the full resolution audio DVD-A has to offer.
Jokatz,
PCM stands for Pulse Code Modulation. This is how music is recorded on CD''s and converted back to analog.
Hope this helps guys wink.gif border=0
