My Mitsubishi HD55905 (1999/2000 model) has the option in the setup for 960i or 480p. The manual is very vague as to what goes on inside. I am assuming that the doubler is doing its job and putting in more lines since the picture is excellent.
I am also assuming that this is occuring on all inputs. What I do not understand is does this "create" a progressive scan picture in the set? If this is so, what is the effect on a progressive scan DVD signal. Do I need a progressive Scan DVD to "see" the difference?
I do not have a progressive scan DVD yet. That is another post.
I think the only progressive scan programs are available on DVD, but if this is correct, why would the 480p option be available on all inputs in the set.
When I switch from 960i to 480p on the setup menu I do not see a difference. Can this set convert any standard signal to 480p.
What does it do to DirecTv digital signals. I e-mailed Mitsubishi these questions and they told me to call a non-toll free # and wait.
Been there...done that and I can''''t wait that long.
Any input here woukd be appreciated.
Thanks
Bob

If you have a progressive scan DVD it will bypass the internal line doubler. You should see a much better picture with your DVD''s.
For regular programming like Directv the TV applies the line doubling to either 480p or 960i.
If you don''t see the line structure (i.e. the scanning lines) the line doubler is doing its work.
Hope this helps.
S & V Moderator II

If I understand you correctly, the line doubler is the 960i setting. If I see no difference, no matter what the input, I guess I just have to assume the progressive scan is working.
I was just wondering if the 480p works with other inputs? Since it is the default setting of the tv I would expect it to.
Will my tv know it is getting a "progressive scan" signal and allow the internal 480p to be bypassed?
I''d hate to drop the cash and find out the 2 year old technology in the TV can''t handle the new stuff. I''m not sure there were Progressive scan DVDs at the end of 1999. Therefore I''m not sure my TV will know what to do with it. My tv is a Mitsubishi HD55905 purchased in Nov 99. (55" diamond series)
