View Full Version : Re: burn in question

I''''m thinking about springing for a 16:9 HDTV, but - frankly - most of my viewing is likely to be in the 4:3 format for now. I''''m trying to come up with methods to avoid burn in without having to use one of the "stretch" modes which, to my eye, really distort the picture.
Some of the Sony models I''''ve looked at (the KDP-57XBR2 and the similar model without the HD tuner) have a "picture with picture" mode that allows you to have two 4:3 images on the screen at the same time and - I think - allows you to resize and reposition these images fairly freely. If this were true, it might be a way to have a 4:3 image on screen, at full 4:3 size, yet be able to reposition it from time to time around the screen so as to avoid burn-in. Two questions:
1) would this work?
2) Does anyone know if these Sony models would actually allow me to do this, or is the feature more limited than I think?
All advice welcomed, and thanks!
Bob Pascucci

You cannot get 2 4x3''s side by side on a 16x9 screen. It is not dimensionaly possible. You can put 2 pics side by side but they will be closer to 3x4 not 4x3. Tall and skinny. On my set you can have separate audio for the other picture and they recommend you send it to Wireless earphones. I did and it works out great. My wife watches soaps and I get speedvision. Two guesses who gets the earphones.
You can get one 3x4 with 3 POP (picture outside of picture) They line up down the right hand side of the screen. Even so they have to be dynamic or you will get burn in.
My Mitsubishi says I can spend 15% of my time viewing 4x3 format on my 16x9. Actually we started out watching 4x3 with the 3 POP pics down the side but rapidly we got accustomed to the "stretched" 4x3 to fill the screen.
I also began to notice some burn in at the margin where the pop and the main pic adjoin. that was one of my motivations to watch the screen in the stretch mode.
Once we got the HD tuner it stretched the pic to fill the screen and there are no options. In the HD mode there is no PIP,or POP. It can''t handle all that information.
Analog/digital signals from the VCR,DVD,DSS can be manipulated but not the HD.
BTW my set is a Mitsubishi Diamond series HD 55905
Don''t know much about Sony but the ratios are the same so I''d expect something similar.
Bob
