Hey everybody! I read an opinion in a seperate post about 7.1 surround in a small room that caught my interest so I thought I would go out to look for more!

My HT room is 16'' long, 11'' wide and 7'' high with the TV on the 11'' wall, am I going to notice a big difference going from 5.1 to 7.1 because my room is only 11'' wide? Maybe I should just go with 6.1(is there a future for 6.1 or are they just going to jump to 7.1 in the future?). Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. I would love to register in the forum but am having NO LUCK!! Never got the Confirmation email!

First, go ahead & post your user name (so we know who you are). It will also help the moderators know "who" is having a problem.

For that size of room, IMO, a 5.1 system would be all you need. The mixing engineers are just now making 5.1 info (used to be just "effects" with rears). In the future, there will be more "info" for a 6.1, 7.1, or there is even talk about 10.1 or 10.2 etc......alot of the info for the 6 or 7 is matrix (the chip just takes the info from the rears & directs it to the other channels). The program material is engineered for just 5.1 from Hollywood. they are still just figureing 5.1 out..........spend good money for your mains....all you can my friend.

The room plays a great part in this decision, IMO. 6or 7.1 is fantastic but to have a rear or two rear speakers you need the seating area away from the back wall or the benefit (separation) is lost. I have a 22x25 room and have had it set up 5.1 and 7.1 over the years, 7.1 is certainly better. If you can get your seating towards the center of the room, actually back about two thirds but off the back wall, then having a 6/7.1 setup will thrill you. If you have to have your seating against the back wall, 5.1 really makes more sense. Best of luck........

so what your saying is that even with a small room, if my seating is away from the back wall i will notice a big difference with 7.1 rather than 5.1?
