View Full Version : Diffusion advice

While I am putting the finishing touches on the bass trap, I have been pondering what I should do for the diffusion part of my room. I know they go on the ceiling between the speakers and the listener, and on the back wall(right?) and sides if you want. I have been looking around and I would like to spend about $300 or less on some good diffusors. I have mainly been looking at the metrofusors and the tfussors from auralex. <BR><BR>My question is would 24 metrofusors($300 or a little less) be better than 6 t fussors($300 exactly)? Or is there another diffusion pannel that I should be looking at? Keep in mind these are to be used with s38s until I can get some Altec A7s or Klipschorns/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif.

<DIV>There are other diffusors out there besides Auralex, but few are less expensive. </DIV><BR>

<DIV>On the ceiling, the Metrofusor covering the area is a great solution. I would place them so they are staggered and separated by about 6 inches on all sides. </DIV><BR>
<DIV> </DIV><BR>
<DIV>As for the rear walls or side walls, the T-Fusors or the Mini-Fusors are excellent choices. You can use fewer of these on walls and they can be separated by the width of each unit to provide a 50% coverage on the exposed wall area.</DIV><BR>

<DIV>Another, better, solution for wall diffusion is over-filled bookcases. If you can place shelves or a bookcase behind the listening area and fill the shelves with lots of stuff, specifically hard statues, figurines, trophies, plates, vases, etc., the results can be phenominal and potentially more attractive. </DIV>

That sounds like a good idea. I think I will use 12 metro fusors for the ceiling, and then 4 t fussors for the back of the room(2 rear, 2 sides). I don't have room for bookcases, my room is to small (10x10x'/idealbb/images/smilies/4.gif''/idealbb/images/smilies/14.gif'. <BR><BR>Also I find the look of the T-fusors attractive (yeah, I am wierd). <BR><BR>one last question, would it be worthwhile to get some cheap rigid fiberglass to put into the back of tht T fussors to "give them more broadband diffusion( as auralex says)" ?

<DIV>Yes, with all of these cheap plastic diffusors, filling the backside with fiberglass will greatly improve their low frequency performance. </DIV>

<DIV>Anything will work. You could use R-12 batting if you wanted. Just force it in their and compress it as much as possible. You don't want rigid fiberglass, you want semi-rigid fiberglass. </DIV>

Would the rigid fiberglass at home depot work for this? It is yellow with a black backing, I never checked out its specs though. Unfortunately that is about what I am limited to ever since realtraps stopped selling the owens corning stuff.

I am about to order the pannels in a week or two. 12 metro fusors and then 4 tfussors. I would like to add some insulation. COF, In your opinion what would you say would be the best insulation from home depot to put in them? And how would you advise mounting them and keeping the insulation inside? thanks.

<DIV>I would get the standard batt fiberglass for in-wall use, r-13, or whatever. </DIV>

hmmm. I will be ordering them probably some time next week. I guess I will have to wait until they arive before I can figure out how to mount them with the least damage to my walls. Thanks for the help IG and Stewie
