It''s funny, when I first listened to this album I wasn''t sure that I liked it. But then I had to do a lot of writing and I put it in the SACD changer and played it in the background and it hit me what a great album this is. As they say it grows on you.

It''s not all standards like her previous albums and I think that took some getting used to. She''s always had the musical chops but I think she''s showing growth as an artist and performer with this album. She uses her voice--which it seems people either really like or don''t--in such emotionally nuanced ways that shows a very clear understanding of the material. If you can''t hear how very good a singer she is then you are just not "getting it." Just listen to the title track, "Almost Blue," "Abandoned Masquerade," or her stellar version of Joni Mitchell''s "Black Crow." This is an album that really takes you places. Sometimes it''s driving the backwoods of B.C. or sometimes it''s a quiet bedroom with streaks of sunlight streaming in through the blinds.

If the scale allowed I would have given it a "4.5", so instead I gave it a "5." Check it out. Highly recommended.

That''s a good way to put it... grows on you. Believe it or not, I bought an earlier cd, then this SACD, went to see her live and still didn''t appreciate her until a week or two ago when I was playing this disc randomly! I even picked up a few of her earlier discs a couple of months ago to try and pick up a broader sample of her work to walk into the show with.

I think she''s a kooky bird; certainly she married a freaky guy (in my opinion)... Her onstage demeanor is somewhat not what you would imagine, she seems real dark.

BUT... her music is really spectacular, after really letting go and listening to it. I used to dislike her vocal style, but it''s something that she definitely has honed. As for this disc, hoops, I think it was her first that she really worked on and developed with Elvis- if I''m not mistaken.

I also gave this a four, but wouldn''t hesitate in a five rating either. I like her up there right after Norah Jones, but two completely different types of music and artists.
