I would, and am interested in seeing if the majority would too.
Maybe if they see that most want it, they''ll give it to us. If most don''t want it.............. oh well. /idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif

Hey Mox, good question.

I for one have been to a few "live Chat" sites, and didn''t particulary like the feature. It was hard to keep up and the ones that were great typers just seemed to run over the ones that weren''t!

It is nice, but when it gets busy, it is just to hard to keep up.

Dennie, who must be one of those slower typers!/idealbb/images/smilies/2.gif

It would be a nice option to have as a way to take a conversation to another level. The big downside is that potential for learnable information could be lost.

I don''t see the learnable info being lost. If anything, it might be made clearer. Toss a few questions back and forth, while it''s still fresh in your mind. But I think most would use it for "Just chat" type of chat, more than HT chat. Could set up certain times to meet, and maybe someone from S&V could come and have a Q&A session.
I don''t think I''d use it for HT talk much, personally. I just think it would be a nice option. Would probably be hard to find anyone there in the chat room. I know I enjoy the times that Allen W and I chat through ICQ. It''s nice to get a response immediately, instead of having to wait for hours or days.

I''d be willing to set a MSN chat IM thing whatever thats called, if anyone felt inclined to do such a thing FWIW. I have one set up that I use to talk to a cousin in Missouri and its nice for that.

I think it would be pretty nice to do this. Everybody would have to learn IRC or settle on some IM service. I''m ICQ #4927178.

Bob

Not for me. As a 1 finger typeist who is spelling challanged I would be way to slow to chat live. But don`t let that stop you guys from going for it.

We practically have it now... at the rate and regularity most of us post. Maybe an alternative would be to all "meet" on the Forum at regular times or arrange conferences if there are particular topics that people want to discuss. I am not sure that there needs to be an actual live chat feature to accomplish this. Plus, I type like a meth crazed receptionist so none of you would get a word in.

/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif

Monkey

I''m a slow typist too.
You faster typists would just have to show some restraint............. /idealbb/images/smilies/9.gif

For me it would not be good, I use this thing alot of times at work, but my boss doesnt want anyone on the internet unless it''s for business, so sometimes I can just periodically check in from time to time, and if the boss comes around I have to shut down in about two nanoseconds, which would appear rude to whomever I was chatting with, also if I can''t log on for five or six hours the conversation could be so long I would really lose interest with reading a lot of babble of people who don''t think seriously of what they are saying, or taking the time to research an item and correct it in their main paragraph. I think the system we have now is great, I can check in whenever I can, and the threads aren''t so long that I get lost or bored with any topic here. Just my .02

Yeah... I like checking in during brief windows of opportunity. These are great little 2-minute breaks from my busy work days.

Monkey

You could still check in.......
We''re not talking about spending the whole day or night in the chat room.
May be used a lot at first, but once the new wore off, would only be used occaisionally.
I don''t want to replace the forums with it...................
I just think it would be nice to have it.

That would be kind of cool. If you''re in need of some HT answers, they can come almost instantly instead of waiting for the next time for whoever you''re looking for to sign on again.

This topic comes up every couple of years, so here it goes again. Instead of asking if anybody wants to get involved in this, having it go back and forth, and then go back into hibernation, I'll just say that I've got an IRC server running on IP:twenty-four.two-twenty-seven.one-twenty.one-fifty-four, port 6667. It is totally private, so the registration process on big time services to keep it amongst ourselves is not necessary. There is a channel on this server called "#audio" which is controlled by a robot. If there is any interest in chatting via IRC, get yourself an IRC client program (I recommend Pidgin for beginners) and try to connect to this server and join this channel. If you see the robot, you've got it right. I usually check in every few hours or so. If this gains some traction, great. I can help with configuration problems. The server isn't going anywhere any time soon.
