It's a small thing, but it's becoming a peeve. Why do journalists ALWAYS add "for a year" to a statement involving power generation or consumption. Ken does it in this month's column. We compare two measures of instantanoues power consumption (e.g. kilowatts) and add a unit of time to one of them. It makes complete nonsense of the statement.

'TV's consume enough electricity to power all the homes in the state of New York' makes sense. Add "for an entire year" to it's meaning has been destroyed for dramatic effect.

I have a Sony 400 disc dvd player and would like something with a little better interface.
I have a friend that has been building and upgrading his own pc's for a while and has offered me a buncha stuff at a next to nothing price.

I would like to build an HTPC with this stuff, the hardeware is more than capable, but I am not sure if I can even do what I want.

I would like to rip DVD's and Blurays to the PC's hard drives (5 1.5tb drives in RAID) and have some sort of software that allows me to view the list of installed films etc... select what I want to see and have it play instantly.

Would the PC need to be next to the tv?

Could I just run an HDMI and Digital Coaxil from the PC to my tv and reciever?

I am not interested in any DVR capabilities. Just ripping my current movie collection into a video jukebox type setup.

I currently have a Panasonic SC-PT660 5 DVD Home Theater System and I wanted to upgrade my speakers at one time but they seem to be "custom" for this surround system. Are there speakers that I can manipulate with different wiring? And, if I'm able to upgrade my speakers with this system, am I able to keep the same speakers and upgrade to another receiver/surround system dvd player system in the future? I apologize if my question sounds confusing but that's exactly where I'm at The State of Confusion. Thanks

Anyway, thought it'd be fun to post thoughts about interesting beer, wine, drinks, etc. that we're partaking of at any particular moment. I'll start:
Not too bad, a little hoppy for my personal taste, almost more of an IPA than a more typical winter brew.

Hello, guess i'm going to be veiwed as a first post bleater, but i do wonder if anyone else here has had an issue with Samsungs DLPs and their WOEFUL customer service. About 18 months ago on my recommendation, my girlfriend purchased a Samsung DLP from Circuit City ( arrrg! ) Set was wonderful once calibrated ( it is a 46 inch model I beleive ) for approx 14months. At that time I noticed a couple of small faint blinking lights at several places on the screen. 1 week later they were replaced with white dots and smal faint blinking lights elsewhere on the screen. No complaints, it was annoying and the set was out of its MISERABLY small watrranty anyways, and Circuit city had sinced closed its doors. Well, the situation continued, now the TV is absolutely COVERED in dead pixels and is basically unwatchable, literally there is not a square inch without 10-20 dead pixels...it is AMAZINGLY bad...and now the set is constantly switching on and off. I am furious and this is NOT helped by a TOTAL lack of response from Samsung. I have forwarded three e-mails ( and granted each got laden with more angst ) to which NONE were responded too. My girlfriend has searched the net and found blogs mentioning this HAS been an issue for a multitude of owners and that SAMSUNG must be aware of the issue. I find it amazing we both get e-mails FROM Samsung touting their #1 status, yet zero response to queries!!!!! She finally got on a live chat with a Samsung rep that bordered on comedy...can we say pre-written script...Samsung took ZERO responsibility on what is OBVIOUSLY an ongoing problem they are FULLY aware of but choose to ignore. For this reason i have vehemetly been steering prospective buyers away from Samsung and towards brands such as Toshiba ( I have one of their excellent 72 DLP's ) whom DO actually entertain a respectable customer relations department to assist customer concerns. So, enough ranting, can ANYONE advise on next steps, I am tempted to track down a Samsung CEO at a headquarters and create something newsworthy like having the TV televised LIVE outside the front doors...but perhaps someone here can suggest something more civilized. Until then I will continue posting my displeasure at an obviously substandard product and a company the obviously does NOT stand behind their product. Thanks...

I'm an Emirates virgin. Have never flown with them before. I'd heard generally good things about them and was looking forward to my Dubai to Cairo...

I'm an Emirates virgin. Have never flown with them before. I'd heard generally good things about them and was looking forward to my Dubai to Cairo flight with them that leaves (actually left) this morning.

I'm not on it.

Why?

Apparently it was badly overbooked - and me and at least a dozen travelers, all of whom had booked many months ago, were left with an eight hour delay.

Say goodbye to the driver that's waiting for me at Cairo airport. I have no way of contacting him to give him the new flight info. With luck my hotel might. In any case I may have to settle for a taxi - which I'm told is a really bad thing to do in Cairo for the one hour trip through the city to my hotel beside the Great Pyramids. Say goodbye to this afternoon's round of golf.

There were some seats available on my original flight up until the cut-off time. But they were given to other "priority" travelers. As far as I can tell from the conversation with the check-in agent, I did not make that priority list because I was not on a religious pilgrimage. Apparently there's a lot of that going on around this time of year. My self-declaration as a devout atheist on a pilgrimage to a Cairo golf resort to attempt to break 80 this year fell on deaf ears!

They were pleasant enough through the whole process, and offered me the usual free round trip ticket as compensation. Unfortunately it's useless since it's only good for this "zone" and I'll likely never get a chance to use it. I asked for an upgrade on my re-booked flight instead; but for now I'm only on a waiting list.

They did put me up at an airport hotel to better pass the eight hour delay. But I was not impressed when they would not let me swap that for access to their executive lounge. They did agree to throw free internet access while at the hotel (it's usually really expensive over here) which is why and how I have time to start this thread.

Anyhow I'm going to catch a few zzzs and then see if I can swap the hotel meal vouchers for some beers (which are also horribly expensive over here!)

All in all, this is not the best way for Emirates to welcome me on as a first time customer. As a frequent traveler I know that this stuff happens, but missing a round of golf in the lee of the pyramids this afternoon makes it more frustrating than it might normally be.
