This Pre/Pro first came to my attention in the Am I going to buy a Denon AV Preamp? thread, i started reseraching it listning to owners who have recently got their hands on one. So far everyone is thrilled w/ the SQ, VQ and BQ of the Integra, i have been in touch with two of the owners getting more feedback that i needed. I decided to pull the trigger on one, so soon as the next bach come in i will take possesion of this puppy! I was also torn on the new Sony STR-DA5300ES that has 6 HDMI inputs!! Cnet gave it a nice review, but it also cost $100 more than the Integra, but is a very nice peice too!
FYI for those who do not know difference between a receiver and a Pre/Pro

    A quick education on terms:
Power Amplifier - A device which greatly increased the voltage and current of an incoming signal in order to power speaker systems.

Preamplifier (HT) - A device which provides input switching, volume control, EQ, and other low level processing. Inputs and outputs are low level signals. Some preamps also include a radio tuner.
Processor (HT) - A device which provides advanced processing, like surround decoding, channel delays, bass management crossovers, and such.
Preamp/Processor (also Pre-Pro) - A device with combines a preamp and a processor into a one chassis solution.
Receiver (HT) - A device which combines Preamp, Processor, and Power Amplifier features into a single chassis, often with a built in radio tuner as well.
Back in the 1950s and most of the 1960s a Hi-Fi nut would have to get a separate phono preamp, a preamp, and a power amp just to have a working set of electronics to listen to his LPs. In the 1960s the large Hi-Fi consoles combined everything into one huge box with speakers, power amp, preamp, phono preamp, radio and turntable. In the 1970s the receiver became popular, and it combined phono preamp, preamp, tuner and power amps into one chassis and made life easy for the hi-fi nut. But the hard core guys still prefered having separate power amps, which typically meant buy a separate preamp, tuner, and power amps.
In the 1980s HT was born and while the first Dolby surround decoders were stand alone devices used along side the receiver with additional amps, eventually they combined the surround decoder with the receiver, but again the hardcore enthusiasts still wanted the benefits of separate power amps and preamp/processors were born. Then they added DACs to the line-up.
A modern receiver combines all sorts of features you can still buy a separate items, if you are a freaky enthusiast - like a preamp, phono preamp, tuner, DAC, ADC, digital processor, surround processor, and power amps (and a few other features). Most very serious enthusiasts still prefer to keep the power amps separate from all those sensitive low level components, so a device like the Integra pre-pro include nearly everything you need from a receiver, but with better performance. You then have to buy separate power amps.

    Turn it on.
Hold the Display button and while depressed, press the power button.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TO STORE SETTINGS (must be done first, otherwise the recall will not have anything to recall):
    Turn the unit on.

From the front panel- Push and keep holding "Setup" thru the whole procedure, then Push "Enter". The unit will display "Setup Store?", push "Enter" again and the unit will display "Setup Storing", then it will display "Complete" and thus the procedure is complete.

    TO RECALL SETTINGS:
    Turn the unit on.

From the front panel- Push and keep holding "Setup" thru the whole procedure, then Push "Return". The unit will display "Setup Recall?", push "Return" again and the unit will display "Setup Recalling", then it will display "Complete" and thus the procedure is complete.

The main thing to remember is HOLD the SETUP button continuously.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    To reset the SSP:

To reset the AV receiver to its factory defaults, turn it on and, while holding down the [VCR/DVR] button, press the [STANDBY/ON] button. “Clear” will appear on the display and the AV receiver will enter Standby mode. Note that resetting the AV receiver will delete your radio presets and custom settings

    To get firmware info:

Turn the SSP on and, while holding down the [DISPLAY] button, press the [STANDBY/ON] button. Release both buttons. MAIN page of firmware info will be displayed.
Press either the [>] or [<> button below the [TONE] button in order to display the second page.
Continue to press either the ">" or "<" button in order to step forward or backward through the six pages of firmware info. If you subsequently press the "Display" button while viewing any of the firmware pages (other than the "MAIN" firmware page), further info is displayed pertaining to that firmware page.
Continue to press the display button in order to step through several pages of additional info (no additional info for MAIN page, four additional pages for each DSP page, one additional page for HDMI page, and three additional pages for VIDEO page). Once this additional info is accessed, the display will NOT revert back if you wait too long between button presses.
Also, the third page of addtional info for the VIDEO firmware page displays the OSD level. This level will not be shown on the display itself but will show up on attached TV.

    To get temperature info:

Turn the SSP on and, while holding down the [DISPLAY] button, press the [STANDBY/ON] button. Release both buttons then press [TONE]. Temperature info will stay on until a function change is initiated.

Pressing [SETUP] after the [DISPLAY][STANDBY/ON] sequence will display some sort of maximum temperature information and what appears to be total running time clock?? It can be reset by pressing [RETURN].

To get input and output video resolution info:

Hold down just the [DISPLAY] button (on the front panel) for about 2 seconds, and the input and output resolution is shown.
    To test all display lights:
[STANDBY/ON][CD] at the same time brings up "Test" on the display, hitting CD again causes all of the functions to light up on the display (i.e., DTS-MA, DD, etc).
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    HQV Reon-VX Controls & Instructions:

The Picture Quality menu items appear on the AV receiver’s display, not the TV screen.

    1. Press and hold down the remote controller’s [DISPLAY] button until a menu item appears.

    2. Use the Up and Down buttons to select a menu item, and use the Left and Right buttons to change its value.

If you don’t operate any buttons for 8 seconds, the Picture Quality menu will close automatically.

    The settings are explained below.

    Brightness

With the Brightness setting, you can adjust the black level of the picture so that blacks appear

as intended and details in dark scenes can be seen clearly.

    Adjustable range: –20 to +20

    Contrast

With the Contrast setting, you can adjust the white level of the picture so that whites appear as

intended and details in bright scenes can be seen clearly.

    Adjustable range: –20 to +20

    Hue

With the Hue setting, sometimes called

    tint,

you can adjust the balance between red and green

in the picture so that colors appear as intended.

    Adjustable range: –20 to +20

    Saturation

With the Saturation setting, you can adjust the amount of color in the picture so that colors

    appear as intended.

    Adjustable range: –20 to +20

    Notes:

    • The Picture Mode function will not work if the souce component (DVD player, etc.) is outputting

    progressive video.

    • The Edge Enhancement function has no effect when the video resolution is down converted, for

    example, 1080p to 720p.

    • The NR (noise reduction) functions support all video input signals up to 480p/576p.

-1080/24p is not processed by the HQV REON- VX video processor

Turn HQV REON- VX on or off:

Using this built in scalar you can choose to do a few different things with the incoming signals. You can set the output resolution to any of the typical options (480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p), or choose “auto” or “pass through”. The auto option is for those who don’t want to get involved and just let the Onkyo choose the best options. The pass through option is for those who feel they have superior source equipment and want to bypass the Reon chip all together. In order to truly achieve that result though you have to go into the “miscellaneous” menu and turn off “immediate display”.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Choosing your Audyssey curve:

To get the Audyssey curve with rolled off HF, simply choose to use Audyssey.

To get the flat high end with Audyssey processing still in tact: Select a THX listening mode and turn off Re-Eq after selecting the THX mode.

Note: This means you cannot get the flat Audyssey curve with two channel sources that you want to listen to as 2.0 or 2.1, since there isn't a 2.0 or 2.1 THX playback setting.

RS232 Cables (straight cable not crossed)

    Keyspan Adaptor

    You can buy it here...

    http://www.amazon.com/Keyspan-Speed-.../dp/B0000VYJRY

Works like charm, do not use anything else. If your PC has a serial port then use an non crossed cable and make sure both USB or serial port are labled Port one or two and you should be good to go.
Or you can go with a this one (sold @ Wal-Mart) that i hear works just as good, and it is cheaper.

    HD Audio Formats:

    100_0840.jpg picture by teehtf
To see the new formats light up your new 9.8/885 front display (pic above), you will need a Blu-ray or HD DVD player that can bitstream them to your unit. When sending LPCM via bitstream or from a on board decoding player or PS3, the front display will say "Muti-Ch". Now that HD DVD is dead, and if you are looking for great performing bitstreaming BD player. I highly recommend the Panasonic..........
    bd301.jpg picture by teehtf
I can't say enough nice things about it, this player will make a nice complement to your unit.
If you get the BD30 set your unit up like this and you will be on your way.
    bd30_bitstream.jpg picture by teehtf
    FYI:
If you are running a 7.1 set-up and want to engage the surround backs with LPCM, Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD MA 5.1, the 9.8/885 can overlay PL IIx, THX Ultra2 and Neo: 6 over the HD formats. It will be up to you to decide on which one sounds best, play arround with them until you find the one that suits your taste.
Another Blu-ray player I recommend is the 3rd gen Sony BDP-S350 that is on par with the BD30 far as PQ performance, boot up and loading times. Updates can be done via the internet (Ethernet input) vs. burning the update to disc (like the BD30) and is BD-Live ready.

    What are discreate code?

"Discrete" codes are remote commands that always do precisely the same thing, as opposed to "toggle" commands that have variable effects.

For example, a remote button that turns a device on when it's off and the same button turns the device off when it's already on is a toggle command.

A button that only turns the device on and does nothing when the device is already on uses a discrete code. A second button that always turns the device off but doesn't do anything when the device is already off is another discrete.

An "Input" button the steps your video selection through HDMI #1, HDMI #2, Component #1, Component #2 and so on with each press of the same button is a toggle. Seperate buttons each labled HDMI #1, HDMI #2, etc. would be discretes."

    --- RoboRay

If you have remote that uses these codes like the Pronto this can very useful to you.

IMO keep your 9.8 and if you can find a 9.8 get it instead, there is not enough of a jump in features to warrent an upgrade. The clone PR-SC886P i'm betting will be the same as the DHC 9.9 features, I know it will look like the current PR-SC885P. Here is a pic of the upcoming DHC-9.9.....

I have had my eye on that unit also, but I have a few other projects to finish first. I also plan to upgrade my speakers before I jump in.
    Congrats!
When does your dealer expect to get your unit to you?

You suck!!! I hope you hate waiting for this as much as I'm hating waiting for that new Ultra. I also hope you enjoy it as much as I'm going to enjoy that new Ultra.
