Default Paradigm Studio 40 vs Def Tech Power Monitor 900

Has anyone had the opportunity to compare these two speakers?

Bass is not an issue (the PM 900 would certainly win in that department) as I have an adequate sub.

Music/HT will be about 90%/10%, with latin and classical music getting the most play.

I have heard both, and do have an opinion, but just wanted to get yours also.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

    Apples vs. oranges my friend.

Will it be possible for you to take home both speakers and compare using your own associated equipment?

I know that both speakers have gotten good reviews.

One nice thing about the PowerMonitors is that you can carefully adjust bass volume levels for each main channel speaker.

I don''t know much about Paradigm, but I do own some Def Techs (bp2000TL/clr2000/bp2x). I have found Yamaha (DSP-A1) to be a great match, and the sound is very natural and neutral sounding. The Def Techs do seem to be revealing of associated equipment, in the sense that changes in amplification, cables, and cd player will probably make an audible difference. The key is to properly set them up (give them some break in time, keep the side-firing woofers away from any nearby objects and initially have the woofers firing outward, experiment with distance in between the speakers and distance from the side and rear walls, keep the tweeters away from any nearby object, carefully adjust the bass volume knobs, and use a slight toe in), and to find a combination of associated equipment that matches well with the speakers.

    Good luck!

Wow, apples vs. oranges is right on the money. These two speakers sound completely different. You definitely want to extensively audition both before deciding which you like better.

I personally own a pair of Studio/40s and absolutely love them. I feel confident saying that there is not a better sounding speaker out there in their price range. A lot of people even think the 40s are even better than the 60s and 80s.

I own the Paradigm 60''s. I have owned their Monitor series also. I have listened to the 40''s and really was impressed. They are I believe the same speaker configuration as the 60''s with different crossovers and cabinet.

I auditioned several models from both Paradigm and Definitive before purchasing my speakers. I thought the Paradigm Studio series were superb and would recommend them over the Definitives, especially when listening to music. Either speaker is an excellent product however, and you should let your own ears decide. Just my two cents worth.
