I have this great amp and I was wondering what you guys think of it.
To me for the $200 I got it for(which was a steal if you ask me)It rivals the detail and power of much higher priced amps.
A couple of years ago I went to a hifi shop on 45st in midtown Manhattan and the salesman demo''ed me a system
with dual mono Macintosh amps and a host of other incredible components. The sound was Amazing for sure.
But while listening I had this feeling that My Sony could do the same with all those other high end components.
Sony's stand alone power amps have all been excellent for the money. I have a few in storage and my best friend powers his whole system with one of their 5 channel amps. They never got the respect they deserved because they are from the dreaded semi-evil empire of average consumer gear.
However, I don't think I would put them in the same camp as McIntosh or Krell. They are great, compared to others in the same price range and some that cost twice as much, but they are not audiophile replacements.
Yes I think you're right, it is not a replacement for a krell or macintosh but While I was listening I couldnt help thinking how close it did sound for the money.
We are so lucky to have a choice to buy mid range components that sound very close to high end stuff for a fraction of the cost.
Dontsleep: I enjoyed reading your comments. I found your positive words quite refreshing, as well as interesting, enlightening & slightly inspiring. I preceive a passion in your words when you talk about your sound system! I'm glad to hear you enjoy your Sony amps.
My guess is you were probably listening to two McIntosh MC1201 1200 watt mono amps. I'm sorry you couldn't hear a significant difference in clarity, lower sound floor, more brilliant highs, & deeper lows between the Mac & your Sonys. Oh well, maybe next time?
Here's several reviews you might enjoy. The latest review is dated March 22, 2004. His speakers are DQ-10's, AM-5's & 901's.

Mwp,thank you for your nice comments and the links.I will be going to read them now!
As far as me not hearing a difference between the Macintosh amps and the Sony, there was no way to compare them but I wish I could do a real a/b test with them.
I think because of the incredible equipment that the Macintosh amps were hooked up to, my amp would have an easy time making beutiful music if given the chance.
TX again.
