Guys... this is shameful... of not criminal. The thing is still sitting in the box. I have been having a crazy weekend between family visits, running, little league game (I coach) and other stuff... I have just not had time to devote to re-rigging the system. It's ot a big job to replace the pre-amp... but calibration will take a while and I want to do it right. I may only be working a half day tomorrow so I should find the time.

    Bump:

Finally got the thing out of the box and on the shelf. It's nice... the unit itself is about 2-3" less deep then the old RSP1098. This is nice because it allows the shelf to act as a little extra strain relief on all the cable hanging off the back. About the only thing I don't like right out of the box is the power button indicator which is about as bright as the sun. It's a little annoying/distracting. Maybe there is a way to dim it... I have not explored the manual yet.

All I did for now was plug in all the connections and then duplicate the exact menu settings I was running in my RSP1098 since the menu systems are nearly identical. I will of course run a more complete calibration when it's not past bedtime in the house... maybe this weekend if I can find the time. I like to run bass sweep CD's and use a meter to find gaps in the bass management, etc. I usually wind up with the sub crossover in the processor set to "off" and manually tuning my three subs to come up and meet the speakers seamlessly. Ask Voodoo... I had it pretty nailed with the old unit.

Some menu options that are new vs. my RSP1098...

    1. Input specific trigger assignments... cool if you run multiple amps or a motorized screen for video related sources but not audio sources.

    2. Input sensitivity adjustments.

    3. Scaling/resolution options for the HDMI output.

One other (more) annoying discovery... my super duper Sony ES BluRay player supposedly won't pass DTS Master-HD... or so I read online. I have actually not tried it yet. Maybe they mean it won't decode the format. So long as it can read it an pass it along to the new Rotel then I am happy. Otherwise it's goodbye Sony ES and hello new BluRay player. Being able to finally access the new audio formats was the whole point of upgrading the pre/pro.

I'll post more observations after I get it up and running 100%.

Here's a photo of my new pre/pro... like I said it's smaller then the old RSP1098 and quite a bit fuzzier as well...

    Bump:

Got her up and running and at least dialed in part way. Scaler looks very good on SD sources... I have an old XBOX, SD DVD w/HDMI, VHS and LD player in the system and the RSP1570 scales them all to 1920x1080/60 via HMDI. One nice thing I noticed was that the scaler automatically steps out of the way with 1920x1080/24 content from bluray's that use this video format. Having the new Dolby True HD and DTS Master HD audio formats is a dream. When I toggle back and fourth on blurays between the old format and the new format the difference is amazing as many of you already know. Just try this on the final scene of V For Vendetta if you are not convinced you should have these formats in your system.

Some things I still need to work on.

    1. Recalibrate video on the TV input I am using. New (Marantz BD7003) bluray player I picked up to gain access to DTS Master HD encoded content looks a little darker and softer then my old Sony ES which would not pass DTS Master HD. New player looks good just a little off on the calibration vs. the old player.

    2. Run bass sweep CD and listen carefully w/SPL meter to assess sub/speaker handoff at crossover point on new pre/pro and make manual adjustments to sub crossovers so they come up meet speakers better. I detect a slight gap that was not there before between subs and speakers. Something may have changed about the bass management sof****e on the new pre/pro which means I need to recalibrate. I had it all dialed on on the old Rotel and something is definately a bit different about this new model.

Other then that I am pleased. Like my old RSP1098 the new model makes aggressive use of the 6th and 7th channels even for 5.1 content. (Side Note: Rotel's surround formula for this purpose has always been excellent... as good as I have heard... maybe even better then Lexicon's Logic 7 post-processing for 5.1 soundtracks. Anyone running a 7 channel speaker layout and dissappointed with the upgrade should check out Rotel's XS post-processing mode. It's really effective.) The remote and its buttons are little smaller then the old one but I plan to get a universal at some point so I don't really care.
