The newer/latest PS3's HDMI board had been upgraded and can bitstream Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD MA or send multi-channel PCM via HDMI. Now you can have both ways so what can't the PS3 not do
Matt, I have not heard of the the new firmware bricking peoples units but every other firmware release this rumor pops up. I will check my firmware tonight, it was working just fine when I beat Uncharted 2 (Kick ass game BTW) last weekend.

theres been a number of threads, mostly hearsay actually, and no scientific proof that the said firmware could brick your ps3.
from what ive gathered, most of the original 60g with Echips are the first to fall. the reason stated was that the firmware was built to 'raise the optical lasers speed higher' - with the newer ps3s its fine, but the older ones cant handle the heat, thus burning out more. a lot have also correlated their ps3's bricking also due to Uncharted 2. its coincidence guys. on my personal experience, ive finished up uncharted 1,2 finishing fallout, and still hasnt bricked it at all. a matter of maintaining your ps3 by cleaning the vents, giving it more than enough room to breath, should be factored in keeping your ps3 in tip top shape.

Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over PS3 Failures
Tue Oct 06, 2009 at 03:15 PM ET Tags: Sony, PlayStation 3 (all tags) Sony is now facing a class action lawsuit based on the allegation that a recent patch to the Playstation 3 has created hardware failures. We reported last week that a not insignificant number of PS3 systems have experienced optical drive failure after installation of a recent patch. Today it was reported that a PS3 owner named John Kennedy has filed a class action suit against Sony for the failures. Among the accusations are complaints for breach of warranty, negligence, and negligent misrepresentation. The 3.0 firmware update for the PS3 was a mandatory upgrade, and is viewed as responsible for causing systems to freeze while playing games, and even stopping the system from recognizing the optical drive. Sony confirmed that the 3.0 firmware affected systems on its blog shortly after the update, though no specifics were given, stating

SCEA is aware of reports that PS3 owners are experiencing isolated issues with their PS3 system since installing the most recent system software update. A further firmware update is alleged to have caused even more problems. What prompted the suit though was Sony's statement that the plantiff in this case would need to pay $150 to have his system fixed. Sony has not yet released an official statement regarding the suit.

i guess thats where the problem is,
considering the new firmware IS the cause, i cant find any critical proof that points towards that direction. i DO tho, would definitely agree that paying 150 for a bricked ps3 is steep, but understandable. then all of the people who have an older ps3 would send in their units without critical proof whatsoever it was the 'firmware' that caused it.
