The PS3 is still the king next to the Oppo BD player, (Queen) it was my first BD player (60GB) back in 2007. I mean what can't the PS3 do?! I wished it had a front display for data info but that is why I bought a stand alone player for the HT.

ok, good (whew). glad to know.
i agree, a display would be nice.

i guess i've heard about people complain about fan noise too. but i only notice it when playing music on really low volume (but who wants to do that anyway). never an issue during movies though.

Default Which Blu Ray player and receiver combo?

Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum. My question is not what Blu-Ray disc player to buy, I've already settled on the Oppo BDP 83. I like the flexibility of playing multiple formats since I have several DVD-Audio discs, SACD discs and DTS CD discs. I know the player allows you to send the signal DSD over HDMI or analog via the analog outputs.
What I want to know is what receivers allow DVD-Audio and SACD multi-channel signals to be sent via HDMI? I've looked at a couple Yamaha, Onkyo and Denon receivers. Some Denon receivers have SACD via HDMI support while other models do not. The other brands and Denon models have multi-channel analog inputs. Other models have HDMI inputs only and no multichannel analog inputs. If the receiver model passes DTS Master Audio and Dolby TruHD, should it naturally also pass DVD-Audio and SACD multichannel via HDMI?
Or do I have to purchase one of the higher-end Denon models that specifically state SACD support via HDMI?

Welcome aboard garypf!

I don't believe any processors pass DVD-A over HDMI, only SACD, which is the DSD (direct stream digital). As for the receivers capable of accepting the pure DSD signal from the Oppo 83, I'm uncertain, although the specifications should state that capability. I'm using a pre/pro that has that feature.

So I would need both connections it seems. I read the review of a Yamaha, I believe the VX-863 that passes SACD through HDMI. The magazine's review is the first I've heard of this model having that capability. So DVD-A can only be sent via analog connections?

Yes, that's my understanding of DVD-A versus SACD. Also if you look at the audio setup in the Oppo, it does not give the option for DVD-A direct DSD, since it will be converted to analog and streamed via the 5.1 analog cables. That option only exists for SACD.
