Default Re: My dedicated room back from the dead!

Hi, Can you tell me a little about the sound of the dyn's with the cinenova? I have the contour 5.4's and am looking to upgrade to the cinenova, aragon 8008x3, or some other choices.. Do the dynaudio's and cinenova match well? Thanks a lot, and your room is very impressive. I love what 2" rigid fiberglass can do to a listening environment.

I am sorry I missed this. I know the post is old but I will answer anyway. I very much like the Cinenova. I prefer it to the Bryston I had before. WIth a nice neutral pre-pro it matches very well. The power is just crazy, bass presentation and the headroom of having that much power on tap is impressive! There are probably other amplifiers out there that are better but you would have to spend BIG money. I would really only go with the Sim Audio Titan or Plinius Odeon over the Earthquake. The Aragon shoudl be a good fit also but I am not sure it has the power of the Earthquake.

Default Updates a year later.

So the rush is on to get the theater done. I need to get it finished so we can sell the house actually. Bittersweet I know but the show must go on.

As you can see I am making progress in that the room is painted, electrical is now done, lighting is done, trim is up. Screen wall is now the priority and then carpet.

Here is a shot of the room in it's current state.

You can see the fabric frames I am working on. I came up with the idea of making large frames cut out of 4 x 8 sheets of MDF. I cut them to size and then cut out the center's to expose the OC 703. They will be covered in fabric once I get all of them built and then painted. I will either use velcro or speaker grill clips to hold the frames in place.

Another forum member came up with the great idea of using low voltage boxes in the frames to pass wires through and to be able to mount plates to the front to finish them off. Great idea, wish I could remember who's build thread I got the idea from. So if it was your idea, THANKS!

I used a router to round over the edges of the inside of the frames. This should make the frames stronger in the corners and less prone to cracking if they are bent. I also flushed the low voltages boxes so the fabric lays flat over them.

I hope to get the frames finished within a week or so and then get the carpet and gear all settled in. With any luck I will get to enjoy it for a few weeks before the house sells!

Thanks for the kind words! I will definately keep them coming, I am hoping to get the other dise done today and if I have enough time the frames for above and below the screen. The issue is these things take time to build, I think I spent the better part of two hours on the frame one the left side that goes around the screen....

I haven't had much time to work on the theater room but I have made some progress. At this point the fabric frames are done and just awaiting upholstery. They took a LONG time to make as they were all made from 4 x 8 sheets of MDF.... They sue speaker grill clips to hold them in place and to be removable.
The only thing this picture does not show is that the frames are all now painted black...

I also cut all of the boards for the frame. They also took me longer than they should have.... Had to make a rip fence for the tablesaw to cut the bevel, had to fix a chop saw that was not accurate.... it sucked but the pieces are perfect. Today I finished the top of the frame so that I can use it as a basis for the other pieces. I drilled holes through the frame and in to the screen to make pilot holes for the speaker grill clips. Once I drilled a hole I left the drill bit in place to make sure it did not move.

Inserted the grill guides and cut the velvet.

I tried to follow a thread on the forum for wrapping corners but because of how I designed the frame I could not have that much material on the sides so I used heat glue and just have one layer and pretty much perfect corners. I am happy with how it turned out as the miter joints will be close to perfect.

When done I simply snapped it in place like a grill.

Default Project resumes.

As fall looms I resume the theater room project. Another child born July 2nd along with a 2 and a half year old has kept us very busy, but now is time to push and finish the room. I picked up where I left off with the screen wall.

I finished the screen frame. All the pieces are wrapped and screwed together. The grill clips worked perfect the the entire frame snaps in place on the screen making it removable in a matter of seconds if necessary. I am pleased that it turned out nice.

Here is a closeup of how the corners look.

I also got one of the screen wall frames wrapped and installed. I used the same grill clip technique to hold the fabric frames in place. This makes the entire front wall removable in the event I change or upgrade something. You can see it below the screen.

Great progress!! I've been moving on mine slowly as well. Do you have your projector location chosen and frame in/wired in? I'm looking for ideas.

My arse is in gear Batman... Screen wall is 95% complete. Next come the absorbers for the first reflection points.

PJ location is done, the previous pages show the projector box and PVC run. Let me know if you have any questions!
