Hey everyone! I've been enjoying reading the various posts here and now have a question...
In my house my parents currently have a 150" Stewart Ultramatte 200 with Microperf, Pioneer SC-09TX, 7 of the (Klipsch) KL-7800-THX speakers, 2 Reference 12 subwoofers, an Elite Blu-Ray player, MX-6000 remote, Sony VPL-VW200 projector and some other odds and ends. This is one crazy system... and I'm lucky to have access to it. Here is my question: I've decided to put my own theater in my bedroom consisting of the following equipment: Sony STR-DA5400ES, on-wall Klipsch XL-23's for the fronts and center and on-wall XB-10's for the rears, an existing JBL sub E250P, Panasonic 65" V10 series plasma and blu-ray player and finally the Logitech Harmony 900 remote with RF. Am I an idiot for spending this much money on a system for a bedroom when I can just head downstairs to the theater? I like cool tech. stuff and have been rationalizing the purchase by the fact that I can simply take this stuff with me to my new (own) place in a couple years. The install isn't until next week so I can still back out of it... what to do...? I appreciate any input! Last edited by rcandre2; 11-05-2009 at 03:28 AM. |

Porn on a 150" screen is a little too revealing so I say go balls-to-the-wall with your bedroom system. Actually, do you need to go with on-walls? Your room must be pretty big if you're going with a 65" television so not sure if space is really at a premium. Also, have you listened to any other speakers or are you just sticking with Klipsh since you're familiar with the brand? Do you really need the RF capabilities of the Harmony 900 or could you get away with the Harmony One? I have the Harmony 980 and the extra step of programming the RF receiver is a pain - and if they haven't made the power cord for the receiver detachable yet then someone needs to be shot and/or fired. The Sony receiver might be over-kill at this point - you might want to consider something in the $500 - $700 range from Denon/Yamaha/Marantz that has pre-outs so that you can add external amps down the road. Of course if you have the money now and that's what you want, go for it. Just please don't hook it all up with Monster (or more expensive) cable...

I appreciate the humor. The theater is completely sound proof so the parents don't hear the moans coming from the porn.... that's not my style... joking aside... I've more or less made up my mind on the equipment and I'm getting a pretty good price from an authorized dealer for everything... actually better than eBay and internet prices! I figured I could just relocate everything when I move in a couple years so I'd rather spend the little extra $$ now than buy a less expensive setup and then have the need to upgrade later.
I guess I was just looking for some support and justification from my A/V addict friends! |

Pros:
You can afford to do it now. You probably won't be able to for awhile once you are on your own. This system could last you for a good decade or two and you'll get a lot of pleasure from it. Cons: I wouldn't do this if you are already in debt on anything or if you have to borrow money to pay for it. I wouldn't do it if you don't have an emergency fund in the bank. I wouldn't do it if you are not on track with whatever education you need to pursue your chosen career. A/V is great, but don't screw up more important stuff to pay for it. If you can truly afford it, by all means, go for it.

IF it were me, I would split the difference and go with a 42-50" 1080p plasma, a PS3 and a good set of wireless headphones. Save some cash for when you want to move out because your new place will have neew challenges that you can't see coming. For serious watching I would go downstairs.
But by all means, this is above and beyond any debt. When you are in debt, you are a slave. Don;t be a slave your whole life chasing the next best thing. |

I appreciate all the input.... luckily I've already got my Master's and am working full-time... no debt as of yet... I'll be sure to post pics after the install! I just look at it like this:
It will last somewhere around 7-10 years. Last time I checked there are no major changes coming in formats or connectivity. I can afford to buy it NOW. That's all! Thanks again! |

Focus on getting out on your own and in your own place. Once you can take care of the basics, add some creature comforts. Both you (and your parents) will be much the better for it. In fact they may even start your HT off with a lovely parting gift! ![]() Just my advice from one generation to another. |

I completely agree with you Jeff...
Well I've got another 2 years of law school left so it doesn't make sense to move out right now....if I wanted to I could but wanted to wait to pass the Bar first as I may find my way into a big firm somewhere other than where I live right now.... Thanks! |
